Meta-owned WhatsApp is rolling out new features designed to boost user privacy. According to WABetaInfo, a site tracking WhatsApp updates, the messaging app is testing a feature that lets users replace their phone numbers with usernames.
This new feature aims to provide an extra layer of privacy by allowing users to hide their phone numbers and use only usernames. Here’s how it works:
Username Only: Users can choose to display only their username instead of their phone number. Note that existing contacts who already have your number will still see it, but new contacts will only see your username.
Username with PIN: This option adds a four-digit PIN to your username. Only users with the PIN can connect with you. However, even with this PIN-enabled option, existing contacts can still message you.
This feature, currently available in the WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.2, will soon be accessible to all Android users in a future update. It is designed to give users more control over their privacy and manage who can contact them.
In addition, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that lets users "like" status updates. Similar to Instagram’s story likes, this will allow users to tap a heart emoji to show appreciation for status updates. Users will receive notifications when someone likes their status, and can view who liked their updates by checking the views list.
