New Delhi: AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi strongly opposed the bill to raise the age of marriage of girls from 18 to 21 years in the Lok Sabha. Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani introduced this bill in the Lok Sabha, to which many opposition MPs objected. After this, the bill has been sent to the Standing Committee for consideration.
Speaking on this bill, Asaduddin Owaisi said that, 'This bill is full of retrograde motions. It violates the right to freedom under Article 19 of the Constitution. An 18-year-old girl can choose the prime minister. If she can live in a live-in relationship, then why is her right to marriage being taken away. AIMIM Chief Owaisi said what you have done for 18-year-old girls. The participation of women in the workforce is less in our country than in Somalia.
Earlier, while introducing the Bill, Smriti Irani said that till 1940, the age of girls was 10 years, which was increased to 12 years. This was followed by the marriage of 15-year-old girls in the country till 1978. Now, we are bringing the Bill which will give equal rights to women. The Union Minister said that 20 lakh child marriages have been stopped in our country from 2015 to 2020. She said the House cannot see the disrespect and backwardness of women.
