Iran is set to hold its presidential elections on June 28 following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. The constitution of the Islamic Republic mandates that Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will serve as interim president until the elections.

President Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and six others, lost their lives when their helicopter crashed in north-western Iran due to bad weather and dense fog.

Candidates for the presidency can register starting May 30, with vetting by the Guardian Council, a body of clerics and jurists. It's unclear if Interim President Mokhber will run.

Raisi's tenure was controversial, marked by mass arrests and executions following violent protests in 2022.

Many analysts expect that Iran's clerical establishment and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will favor a candidate similar to Raisi, known for his ultraconservative stance and strong opposition to the US and Israel. The Guardian Council has historically made it difficult for reformist candidates to participate.

Iranians across the country mourned President Raisi’s death, with a national mourning period declared. His body will be taken to Qom and then Tehran before burial in Mashhad.
