New Delhi: These days there is a debate in the country regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Meanwhile, Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, referring to the written petitions pending in the Supreme Court on this matter, said that the government has no plans to implement UCC in the country as of now. The Minister said that Article 44 of the Constitution provides that the State shall endeavour to secure a Uniform Civil Code for the citizens throughout the territory of India.

Along with this, the Union Minister said in his reply, "Individual laws like Testament and Succession, Will, Joint Family and Partition, Marriage and Divorce are related to Entry 5 of List-III of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. State Governments should also have the full right to make laws.'' It is noteworthy that UCC has been involved in the BJP's political agenda for a long time and was also a part of the party's election manifesto for 2019. BJP leaders have been demanding UCC from time to time. Union Minister Giriraj Singh kept calling UCC the demand of time. Similarly, BJP MPs Kirori Lal Meena and Nishikant Dubey have tried to introduce a Private Member Bill on UCC several times in the past.

At the same time, BJP-ruled Uttarakhand has already moved ahead on this matter. A committee has been constituted to implement UCC in the hill state. The first meeting of the committee was held a fortnight ago. CM Pushkar Dhami had urged other states to follow the model being adopted by their state on UCC.
