New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre has said that the exercise of revising pension for ex-servicemen under One Rank, One Pension (OROP) is on. Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt gave a detailed account in this regard in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Bhatt said the pension under OROP is being reviewed and it will be considered effective from July 1, 2019. He also referred to a Supreme Court order in this regard.

It may be recalled that the central government issued a notification in 2015 announcing the implementation of OROP. It provides for a review of pension every five years. Let us know that the BJP had promised to implement OROP before the elections. The government notified the existing OROP scheme in November 2015 and it was implemented on July 1, 2014. However, in 2019, it was to be amended, which did not happen. At the same time, the Supreme Court has turned down a review petition filed by the Central government in connection with its decision to uphold the One Rank-One Pension principle adopted in 2015. The supreme court said that there is neither any constitutional deficiency in the government's decision nor is it arbitrary. A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud said there was no merit in the review petition.

The Supreme Court said that the request for listing the review petition in the open court has been rejected. We have carefully looked at the review petition and the documents related to it. The review petition did not show any merit. The court had upheld the One Rank-One Pension principle adopted by the Centre in its judgment on March 16.
