GENEVA: Despite the fact that several high-income nations have begun to distribute the fourth and fifth Covid vaccine doses, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus estimates that one-third of the world's population has yet to receive a single dose.

"This is our third Covid-19 strategic plan, and it might and should be our last," Ghebreyesus said, as he set out three possible scenarios for how the pandemic could play out this year. The most plausible scenario is that the virus evolves, but the severity of the disease it causes decreases over time as immunity grows as a result of vaccination and infection.
As immunity wanes, periodic surges in cases and deaths may occur, necessitating frequent boosting for vulnerable groups, he said.
