The inaugural 'Global Summit on Traditional Medicine' is scheduled for August 17-18 in Gandhinagar, marking a significant collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian government. This pioneering event aims to capitalize on the extensive knowledge and proficiency within the nation, providing an eagerly awaited platform for experts and practitioners to delve into the latest scientific progressions and evidence-based insights within the field. The overarching objective is to ensure the health and well-being of all individuals, as stated by the Ministry of Ayush.
The inauguration of the summit will be led by the Director-General of the WHO, accompanied by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The event is expected to be graced by G20 health ministers, WHO regional directors, and representatives from countries across the six WHO regions. In addition, scientists, traditional medicine practitioners, healthcare workers, and members of civil society organizations will contribute to the event's significance, as emphasized by Union Minister of State for Ayush, Munjpara Mahendrabhai Kalubhai.
In a press conference addressing the summit, Kalubhai conveyed that its outcome will materialize in the form of a declaration. This declaration is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future trajectory of the WHO global center for traditional medicine. He further underlined India's commendable approach in blending traditional practices with contemporary methods, bolstered by forward-looking policies and digital initiatives. This amalgamation has showcased a viable pathway for achieving universal health coverage (UHC) through the traditional medicine system.
Manoj Jhalani, Director of the Department of Health Systems Development at the WHO South East Asia Regional Centre, highlighted the anticipated role of the summit in formulating a roadmap towards a more holistic and healthier global landscape for future generations. This approach recognizes the intricate interplay between human health, ecological balance, and technological advancement.
Throughout the summit, an array of speakers will lead discussions centered around key thematic areas. These include research, evidence, and learning; policy, data, and regulation; innovation and digital health; as well as biodiversity, equity, and traditional healthcare knowledge. Moreover, the event will feature a comprehensive exhibition spotlighting traditional medicine practices worldwide. Central to this display is the representation of traditional medicine's connection with the natural environment, symbolized by 'Kalpavriksha'. This depiction will be complemented by scientific and technological advancements fostered by various regional centers of the WHO and the Ministry of Ayush.
