Former Congress president and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday skipped his father Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary celebrations and visited Pichhwariya village in Raebareli's Nasirabad area, where a man named Arjun Pasi was recently murdered. Braving heavy rain, Rahul Gandhi met the family of the deceased and assured them of justice.

Arjun Pasi murder case

Arjun Pasi was shot dead on August 11. The murder was a result of a dispute with Naveen Singh, and seven people were named in the case, while five others were unidentified. The police arrested six of the accused on August 13, but the seventh accused, Vishal Singh, is still absconding. The case has now taken the form of a caste conflict, with the Karni Sena complicating matters further by siding with the accused.

Rahul Gandhi's visit and demand for justice

Rahul Gandhi met Arjun Pasi's family and guaranteed them justice. He said that he has come here to protect a Dalit family and assured them of all possible help. After this, Rahul Gandhi spoke to Rae Bareli DM Harshita Mathur and SP Abhishek Agarwal over the phone and advised them to take strict action in the case.

Political strategy and caste based mobilisation

The Congress party is preparing for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and is making efforts to woo Dalit votes in Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi had already played the backward and Dalit card, which was politically successful. Now the Congress has adopted a strategy to woo the Pasi community. Voters of the Pasi community play an important role in Rae Bareli and Amethi, and the Congress aims to strengthen its position among these communities.

SP is also eyeing

The SP is also trying to woo the Pasi community. SP leaders like Awadhesh Prasad and RK Chaudhary have also paid attention to the matter. Akhilesh Yadav has also sent a delegation to connect with the people of the Pasi community. Rahul Gandhi's visit to Rae Bareli and his meeting with Arjun Pasi's family is part of the Congress' strategy to woo Dalit and backward class voters. Both the major parties, Congress and SP, are trying to woo Dalit votes for the 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
