Bengaluru: Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh's statement on cow slaughter in the Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka has triggered a ruckus. In fact, K. Venkatesh had said last week that if buffaloes can be slaughtered, then why not cows? This statement of the Congress minister was fiercely opposed and now the BJP has come out on the streets against it. BJP workers have taken to the streets of Bengaluru on Tuesday (June 6) with cows. The BJP said the Congress minister's statement was an insult to the Hindu faith, in which the cow is worshipped as a mother.

There have also been indications from the newly elected Congress government that the cow slaughter prohibition law, which was enacted by the previous BJP government to stop cow slaughter, may be amended. State Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh said farmers face problems in disposing of overaged animals and dead animals. "If buffaloes and bulls can be slaughtered, then what is the harm in slaughtering cows?" the Congress minister had said, adding that amending the cow slaughter law would be in the interest of farmers in the state. The previous BJP government in Karnataka had introduced the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Bill in 2020. After getting the green signal from the Assembly in 2021, it became law and cow slaughter came under the category of crime in the state. Now the Congress is again considering changing that law to remove cow slaughter from the category of crime.

Let us tell you that when the BJP government brought this anti-cow slaughter bill, the Congress had fiercely opposed it and walked out of the Assembly. Earlier in 2017, when the issue of banning cow slaughter was raised, the Kerala Congress protested against it by slaughtering cows on the middle of the road and gathering people and distributing beef to them. On which there was a lot of ruckus.
