The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. It is held on 28 April and has been observed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) since 2003. Since then, World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a UN international day that is celebrated every April 28.

A national occupational safety and health culture is one in which the right to a safe and healthy working environment is respected at all levels, where governments, employers and workers actively participate in securing a safe and healthy working environment through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties, and where the highest priority is accorded to the principle of prevention.

It is concerned about safe work and awareness of the dimensions and consequences of work-related accidents and diseases; to place occupational safety and health (OSH) on the international and national agendas; and to provide support to the national efforts for the improvement of national OSH systems and programmes in line with relevant international labour standards. The 2011 World Day for Safety and Health at Work focuses on the implementation of an Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) as a tool for continual improvement in the prevention of workplace incidents and accidents.

'World Day for Safety and Health at Work' is aimed to draw people's attention to the accidents and diseases that occur in the midst of work across the world. It is an awareness programme under which people are told how they can also avoid various diseases and accidents at the workplace. The campaign released by the World Health Organization has also focused on collecting safety and health data at the workplace and improving their capacity for their proper use.

The International Trade Organisation (ILO) announced to celebrate the day. It has been celebrated since 2003, with the aim of providing safety and other health facilities to the employees working at the workplace. The ILO joined it in 2003 at the request of trade unions. This campaign by ILO is necessary to make the governments aware of the problems of workers all over the world and for better measures and facilities for their safety.
