New Delhi:Gopalkrishna Gandhi, grandson of The Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, has flatly refused to be the presidential candidate from the opposition. He issued a statement saying that he is grateful for the offer of his name on behalf of the united opposition. At the same time, he also denied his candidacy for the presidency.  

"I urge the opposition to consider another name which could prove to be a better president than me. Earlier on June 15, on speculations of being fielded by the opposition, Gopalkrishna Gandhi had said that it is too early to make any comment in this regard. According to reports, some opposition leaders had spoken to Gopal Krishna Gandhi over the phone and offered him to be the presidential candidate.  

Earlier in 2017, he was also made the vice-presidential candidate by the opposition against Venkaiah Naidu, but he had to face defeat. Gopal Krishna Gandhi has been a diplomat in the past. Apart from this, as the Governor of West Bengal, he also served from 2004 to 2009. Not only this, Gopal Krishna Gandhi has also served as the Indian High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka.
