Jerusalem: A serious national emergency was evident as scores of riot police charged through Tel Aviv's streets amid raucous anti-government demonstrations. Their objective was to free Mrs. Benjamin Netanyahu, the wife of the Israeli prime minister, from a posh salon where she was receiving hair services.

The beauty salon was under siege by protesters on Wednesday night as they chanted "shame, shame," bringing Sara Netanyahu to the forefront as a divisive figure who has long been linked to her husband's political career.

The prime minister allegedly accepted gifts from wealthy friends, including tens of thousands of dollars' worth of champagne crates and pricey jewellery for Sara Netanyahu, in exchange for political favours. He also allegedly made behind-the-scenes deals with newspaper publishers to secure more positive coverage for his wife.

He claims he did nothing wrong. Most recently, a parliamentary committee approved additional spending funds for the Netanyahus, including an increase in clothing and cosmetics costs for Sara Netanyahu totaling thousands of dollars annually.

The family of Benjamin Netanyahu has portrayed themselves as the victims of a media war. After Ehud Olmert, a former prime minister, labelled them as "mentally ill," they filed a libel lawsuit against him.

Sara Netanyahu has been charged with interfering with the prime minister's decision-making by opponents of the Netanyahu family. Recent court testimony from former officials claimed that she had undue influence over top security appointments.

Benjamin Netanyahu uploaded a picture of himself hugging his wife late at night on Twitter, claiming she had returned home safely and admonishing that such "anarchy" would result in fatalities.

She noted that the incident from yesterday might have resulted in murder. She urged the leaders of the opposition to denounce "the violence, anarchy, and incitement."
