U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan emphasized that the Biden administration remains indifferent to the challenges faced by the Assad government, which is supported by Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. Speaking on Sunday, Sullivan remarked, “We won’t cry over the fact that the Assad government is under certain kinds of pressure.” However, he expressed serious concerns about the intentions and objectives of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the rebel group at the center of the recent offensive against Assad's forces.

Sullivan, along with National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett, reiterated that the United States considers HTS a terrorist organization. Both officials clarified that the U.S. has no involvement with the group’s actions against Assad’s regime. This distinction underscores the complexity of the situation, as the U.S. seeks to navigate its opposition to Assad while condemning HTS’s activities.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to rise. Since Wednesday, attacks by Syrian government forces and their allies in northwestern Syria have claimed the lives of at least 56 civilians, including 20 children, according to the White Helmets, a civil defense group operating in the region. Additionally, 238 people have been injured in these strikes, further exacerbating the suffering of those caught in the crossfire.

The U.S. government’s remarks highlight its dual focus on countering terrorism and addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis, as it closely monitors the rapidly evolving conflict in Syria.
