On Saturday evening, a wild elephant killed Punaram Basumatary (60), a resident of No 2 Kachamari area in Sootea. Wild elephants used to come out of the 6th edition of Kaziranga National Park (KNPsurrounding )'s region in search of food in the nearby villages. The sixth edition of KNP shares a border with the Kachamari, Tewaripal, Bokabil, and Gorpal parts of south Sootea. A group of wild elephants also visited No. 2 Kanchamari hamlet on Saturday night, destroying many homes.
One of the elephants rushed towards Punaram's home, breaking it on one side. Punaram attempted to leave the scene after seeing this, but he was trampled to death when he was confronted by the big wild elephant. At night, a team of Sootea cops arrived on the scene and took the body for a postmortem.
