New Delhi: Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman will be honoured with the 'Veer Chakra' today. An announcement was made to honour him with this honour, but today President Ram Nath Kovind will confer this honour on him. Wing Commander Abhinandan shot down Pakistan's F-16 fighter jet after the Balakot Air Strike.
It may be recalled that on February 14, 2019, Pakistan's terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad carried out a suicide attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama. In this attack, 40 Indian soldiers were killed in the attack. The Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike in Balakot, Pakistan on the night of February 26-27 to give a befitting reply to the attack. More than 300 terrorists in Pakistan were killed in India's airstrike.
On February 27, the day after the airstrike, the Pakistani Air Force tried to enter India but was driven out by the Indian Air Force. Wing Commander Abhinandan was currently flying the MiG-21 at that time. They killed Pakistan's F-16 with the same fighter jet. However, Abhinandan's plane later crashed into Pakistan's border, after which he was taken captive by the Pakistani army. But under pressure from India, Pakistan released Abhinandan after nearly 60 hours.
