Kolkata: In a disturbing incident in Kolkata, the body of an unidentified woman was discovered buried near a busy road on Kashi Bose Lane on Saturday afternoon. The partially exposed body, found in Ward 17 of Kolkata, has prompted a police investigation. Residents reported a foul odor emanating from the intersection of Kashi Bose Lane and Bidhan Sarani in North Kolkata throughout the morning. By the afternoon, the stench intensified, leading locals to notify the police and local councillor. Authorities excavated the area and unearthed the decayed, half-naked body at approximately 3:45 PM.
The victim was found wearing only a t-shirt, with her lower body exposed. The circumstances surrounding her death are currently unclear. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Recent roadwork on Kashi Bose Lane, which involved digging for a water pipeline, concluded on July 10. Workers reported that the trench was covered properly after the work was completed, with no signs of the body at that time. The road was paved following the completion of the pipeline work. It is suspected that the woman was murdered and her body buried in the trench shortly before it was covered.
There were speculations that the woman might have fallen into a water-filled trench due to recent rains, though a worker involved in the pipeline project indicated that falling into the hole was unlikely. Given the woman's half-naked state, there is strong speculation of possible sexual assault. The police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and checking missing person reports to identify the victim. They are also distributing her photograph to neighboring police stations for identification.
The incident has sparked political controversy, with BJP leaders criticizing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government. Amit Malviya from the BJP condemned the state administration, calling West Bengal a “living hell hole for women” and questioning the Kolkata Police’s response. The West Bengal BJP echoed these sentiments, accusing Mamata Banerjee of failing to protect women and allowing rampant violence. They described the discovery of the woman's body as evidence of the regime's incompetence and urged for justice.
In response, Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh acknowledged administrative shortcomings but dismissed the crime angle, suggesting that the woman may have fallen into the water supply trench due to soft ground. Ghosh admitted to administrative failures but insisted there was no criminal intent. As the investigation progresses, the post-mortem report will be crucial in confirming whether the death resulted from an accident or foul play.
