Lucknow: In an inspiring initiative to promote environmental conservation, women in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, have embraced a unique way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. Instead of the traditional sweets, they are tying rakhis to trees and offering them fertilizers, showcasing their commitment to preserving nature.

Raksha Bandhan, celebrated on Monday, traditionally symbolizes the bond between siblings, with promises of protection and care. This year, a WhatsApp group named 'VIP,' led by a dedicated committee, is redefining the celebration by fostering a deeper connection between people and the environment. The committee, under the leadership of Neetu Gupta, has orchestrated this innovative campaign to inspire more people to engage in environmental conservation.

Since last Thursday, members of the group have been actively participating in this heartwarming initiative. They have been adorning trees with rakhis, applying tilak, and watering them with a mixture of fertilizer, rather than the customary sweets. Gupta explained that this symbolic act is intended to highlight the importance of tree planting and environmental care, aiming to instill a sense of responsibility towards nature.

In the face of escalating climate change challenges, the group's mission is clear: to make a significant impact through large-scale tree planting. Their ambitious target for this year is to plant one lakh trees, reflecting their dedication to combating environmental degradation.

So far, the group has tied rakhis to around 1,000 trees, demonstrating their earnest commitment to the cause. Municipal Commissioner Vipin Kumar Mishra has lauded this initiative, recognizing its potential to spark a broader movement towards environmental stewardship. He emphasized the need to expand this effort into a mass movement, highlighting its importance for the community and the environment.

This creative and heartfelt approach to celebrating Raksha Bandhan not only honors the festival's spirit but also serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to care for the planet. The women of Shahjahanpur have set a remarkable example, blending tradition with environmental activism and inspiring others to join in the cause.
