India under UN set to deploy Women platoon in Sudan

India is all set to deploy the platoon of women peacekeepers for the UN mission in Sudan, Abyei, where a recent erupt of voilence has triggered a series of humanitarian challenges concrening women and children in the tempered zone.

The unit is the country's largest single female Blue Helmet unit in a UN mission since 2007. Women peackeepers are highly recognised in peacekeeping missions all around the world for their capacity to interact with local women and children particularly in the effected areas where they have experienced sexual assault. 

India is amongst the largest contributer of troops in the UN peacekeeping. Before this India has also deployed its first ever all women battalion in Liberia in 2007. india is also looking to increase the number of women in peacekeeping with a significant percentage. This deployment of the women's peacekeeper is a part of Indian Battalion in the United Nations Interim Security Force, Abyei (UNISFA) on 6th January, 2023.

The Indian represntative in UN from New York has said that the “Indian women particularly have a tradition in Peacekeeping. Dr Kiran Bedi, UN’s first Police Adviser, Major Suman Gawani and Shakti Devi have made a mark for themselves in UN Peacekeeping.  Our teams in the Congo and South Sudan have also done sterling work in mainstreaming women and children into Community and Social developmental projects at the grassroots level".

India was the first country to delpoy all women battalion to a UN peacekeeping mission back in year 2007, which will inspire the whole upcoming Liberian generation that women too can take part in the country's security sector. India in 2014 deployed the Devi of the Jammu and Kashmir Police inthe UN assistance mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which was also named for the recipient of International Female Police Peacekeeper Award by the UN's Police Division for her exceptional achievements and efforts towards helping victims of gender based voilence. 

125 strong women peacekeepers of Indian Formed Police unit deployed in Liberia and has been cheered up for their contribution and inspiring the women's to become the police officers in the West African region. UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon had applaude the India's participation and setting the women empowerment example. Said that the Indian Women's shown that women's can help the world in its efforts to combat sexual abuse.

More than 200,000 Indians have already served in 49 UN peaecekeeping missions around the world since 1948. In 1960, women who are serving in the army medical services have gotten interviewed by the UN radio before they were being deployed to Republic of the Congo.

ndia is the second largest contribute to UN peacekeeping system with contributionof 5887 trrops and personnel deployed across 12 missions, after Bangladesh as per the 31st October, 2022 data. Indian contingent comprising two officers and 25 others ranks, will form part of an engagement platoon and specialize in community outreach, wll be performing extensive security realted tasks as well, said in the press released document.
