Guwahati: Guwahati International Airport, also known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, organised a workshop on "role of the airport in the process of developing the tourism industry in Northeast India".
The workshop was inagurated by Jayanta Malla Baruah Minister of Tourism, Government of Assam. Baruah listed many steps the Assam government has launched to enhance tourism in the area. The airport will eventually play a crucial role, he said, thanks to the active leadership of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had a clear vision for tourism in the NE region.
Sher Khan, Deputy CEO of Adani Airport Holding Limited, Ahmedabad, Additional Chief Secretary Maninder Singh, Secretary Department of Industry and Tourism Ravi Shankar Prasad, representatives of India Tourism from Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Assam, senior airline executives, Regional Executive Director for the NE Region from the Airports Authority of India, and numerous airport officials spoke at the event.
Sher Khan, the Deputy CEO of Adani Airports, presented facts from the airport and persuaded the audience of its enormous growth potential. He also provided information on possible future connectivity plans for Guwahati Airport with other Indian cities and potential international locations.
With his ealier experience at Changi Airport, Singapore he said, how the airport contributed to the development of tourism in the country. Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer, LGBI Airport, provided background information for the session by discussing the potential of Guwahati airport to develop into a regional hub where every resident of the area could fly to any city in India and return home within 24 hours. He also stressed that Indian individuals would be able to travel to the East for less money and in less time if there was established international connectivity with Eastern nations.
Furthermore, Guwahati airport could promote economic growth by shipping distinctive Northeastern goods including tea, rice, vegetables, spices, fruits, etc.
Dignitaries from the tourism offices of the Northeastern states also attended the session. The Secretary of Industry and Commerce, Dr. Laxmanan S, discussed a number of government initiatives to which the airport can also contribute.
The course was attended by Addl Chief Secretary (ACS), Maninder Singh. Speaking at the event were Ravi Sankar Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, the Environment and Forest department, Philip F Tariang, and Ban Nongkynrih.
The session also covered the potential of inland canals and highways to draw tourists.
