Bogotá, July 25: A tragic drone attack on a soccer field in Cauca, Colombia, resulted in the deaths of 10 people, including a minor, on Tuesday night. Military officials confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

The attack, conducted by dissidents of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group, took place in the El Plateado district of Argelia, as reported by Gen. Federico Mejia, head of the Army Specific Command in Cauca.

Before the deadly strike on the soccer field, where children were playing, there had already been 13 drone attacks targeting the army, using explosives, Mejia informed local media.

The final drone, launched around 9:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday from a house on the western side of the field, dropped an explosive device. This attack caused multiple casualties and claimed the life of a minor, he said.

The general stated that these attacks were a retaliation against ongoing anti-guerrilla military operations.

Notably, this attack coincides with World Drowning Prevention Day, observed on July 25. Drowning has led to over 2.5 million deaths in the last decade, with 90% occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Globally, the highest drowning rates are among children aged 1–4 years, followed by those aged 5–9 years. Drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death, accounting for 7% of all such fatalities.
