Every year, World Kidney Day is celebrated on the second Thursday of March, and this year it is being celebrated on 11 March. It is a global awareness campaign to raise awareness about the importance of kidneys in health to reduce the impact of kidney disease and related health problems around the world. One in ten people in the world is affected by kidney disease. World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundation (IFKF).

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a continuous loss of months or years. When the kidney process falls below a certain point, it is called kidney failure and untreated kidney failure can be life-threatening, requiring dialysis or kidney transplant to sustain life. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and other disorders can occur due to chronic kidney disease. Early detection and treatment of the disease can often prevent chronic kidney disease from worsening. CKD and AKI often arise from pollution due to social conditions such as poverty, gender discrimination, lack of education, occupational risk, and other reasons.

Keep these things in mind:
Kidney disease is silent killer. There are no signs or symptoms at the beginning of chronic kidney disease.
Chronic kidney disease is generally not cured.
Blood and urine tests are done to test for kidney disease.
Kidney disease can be treated. Early detection of CKD provides a better chance of receiving effective treatment.
Diabetes and hypertension are the major risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Kidney disease produces 'kidney failure'.
