World Orphans Day 2023: A Look at Orphanes

May 7 is marked as World AIDS Orphans Day, a grassroots campaign designed to generate awareness and promote advocacy for the more than 15 million children worldwide orphaned by AIDS.

Only a small portion of the problem, i,e millions more people have been made vulnerable. are orphans left behind by AIDS. There are millions of human pain stories hidden behind the statistics. The AIDS outbreak has a devastating effect on families and communities, escalating burdens and worsening poverty. Orphans and other children affected by AIDS still reside with their extended relatives in greater than 95% of cases. These families do, however, struggle to care for and raise the kids in their charge as they become more and more impoverished.

Despite advancements in AIDS funding, prevention, and treatment, the world continues to overlook the fundamental requirements of millions of defenseless children. Even though they provide the bulk of care and assistance for orphaned and vulnerable children, few resources are getting to the families and communities that are on the front lines of response. If we do not act quickly to protect children's fundamental rights and the families, communities, and organisations that care for them, a generation will be gone. If we plan a comprehensive strategy backed by a strong political will, we can defeat AIDS.

A brief history of World Aids Orphans Day (WAOD): Albina du Boisrouvray, the founder and president emerita of FXB, created WAOD in 2002 to draw attention to the millions of children living with AIDS. Every year on May 7, FXB organises a grassroots movement to raise awareness of and fight for the rights of AIDS-affected children.

A global alliance of mayors led by FXB was established to encourage their constituents to support and advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable children. This coalition currently includes more than 800 mayors and political leaders from 41 different nations.

Advocates for WAOD urge their home governments to allocate at least 10% of all HIV/AIDS money for the benefit of orphans and other vulnerable children.
