I want to tell you
about the sunflower I found
on the sidewalk yesterday.
It is wilting and curled and gorgeous
and knows it.
I want to age like that,
never forgetting my own beauty,
never forgetting how to say bloom.

While World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21 every year, the year was declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in the year 1999, "with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity to listen to endangered languages" it aims to promote the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry all over the world and as stated in the original UNESCO declaration.
Although usually celebrated in October, the world community celebrated it on the 15th in the late 20th century, the birthday of the Roman epic poet and poet Lorg, Virgil, under Augustus. The tradition of keeping the Date of October for national or international Poetry Day celebrations is still in many countries. The United Kingdom usually uses the first Thursday in October, but a different October, or sometimes even a November date, is celebrated.
