Travel and tourism are among India's largest industries, collectively contributing a substantial $178 billion to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to the Ministry of Tourism, Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in February 2023 surged to 865,779, marking a remarkable growth rate of 259.4 percent compared to the 240,896 arrivals in February 2022. In 2020, the travel and tourism industry contributed a staggering $121.9 billion to India's GDP. Furthermore, the tourism sector provided employment to 39 million people, constituting 8 percent of the country's total workforce.
Prospects for India's Tourism Economy
India's tourism market is on a trajectory to reach the $125 billion milestone by the Financial Year 2027. By 2028, international tourist arrivals are projected to reach an impressive 30.5 million. Notably, the medical tourism sector is expected to experience robust growth, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 21.1 percent from 2020 to 2027.
Government Support and Investment
The Union Budget of 2023-24 allocated a substantial $2.1 billion to the Ministry of Tourism, recognizing the sector's potential to create job opportunities and promote entrepreneurship among the youth. Additionally, $170.85 million has been earmarked for the Swadesh Darshan Scheme. Indian companies have embraced modern technologies, ushering in innovations such as enhanced search engines, global distribution system (GDS) services, cloud solutions, and the burgeoning presence of online travel agencies.
A Diverse Portfolio of Tourism Offerings
Given India's vast and diverse tourism market, there's a wide array of niche tourism products catering to different interests. From adventure and cruises to wellness, religious tourism, medical tourism, sports, eco-tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), film tourism, and rural tourism, India has it all. The country has also emerged as a significant spiritual tourism destination for both domestic and foreign tourists. In the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report of 2019, India secured the 34th position.
In 2021, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) ranked India second in terms of Travel and Tourism Employment. During the same year, India claimed the sixth position in the 'Contribution of Travel and Tourism to GDP' category. However, in 2022, India was placed 54th in the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index.
The Role of Startups
India's travel and tourism industry have witnessed the emergence of nearly 1,500 startups. These startups encompass a wide spectrum of services, from platforms that assist tourists in planning and booking travel services to solutions for travel service providers, all powered by modern technology. These companies facilitate the discovery and booking of travel-related services, including transportation, tour packages, accommodation, ticketing, and activities through online portals.
