On Saturday, Japan launched the world's first dual-mode vehicle (DMV) for public usage. The DMV resembles a minibus and can travel on normal roads with standard rubber tyres. However, what sets it apart is that it has steel wheels that activate at interchange stations, allowing it to operate on tracks like a train.
According to Reuters, the world's first DMV opened its doors to the general public in Kaiyo, Japan. The steel wheels at interchange stations raise the front rubber tyres off the ground, while the rear rubber tyres drive the DMV onto the rail track, despite the DMV's appearance on the road.

According to Asa Coast Railway, the DMV deployed in Kaiyo can attain a top speed of 60 kmph on rails and triple digit speeds on the road. It can transport a total of 21 passengers at any given time.

Potential DMV advantages

Asa Coast Railway supports the DMV's dual ability to help individuals in remote areas of Japan gain access to mobility. CEO Shigeki Miura told Reuters, "The DMV can reach residents (as a bus) and transport them onto the train as well."

Miura feels that this is especially important for those in rural regions, and that it will benefit the elderly in particular.The DMV service will go along the coast of Shikoku Island in southern Japan, giving passengers a magnificent vista. It might also be used to generate revenue from visitors.
