NEW YORK: More than half of the world's population has been fully vaccinated nearly a year after mostly wealthy countries began rolling out coronavirus vaccines, but the global rollout remains uneven, with poor countries reporting much lower vaccination rates than rich countries, according to The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Friday.

"Public health experts have been warning that vaccine disparity is prolonging the pandemic," according to the report, "as the focus of those aiming to accelerate global vaccine coverage shifts from filling a lack of vaccine supply to distributing the doses and persuading individuals to acquire them."

According to the newspaper, 'Our World in Data,' an information cooperation between the University of Oxford and the Global Change Data Lab charity, about 54 percent of the world's population is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Nearly 62 percent have got at least one dose of vaccination. Despite this, only about 11 percent of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose of vaccination. According to Our World in Data, this number rises to about 55 percent for lower-middle-income countries and over 80 percent for both upper-middle-income and high-income countries.
