NEW DELHI: Glenn Phillips, a middle-order batsman for New Zealand, said he would "absolutely love" to captain the senior men's ODI team one day and that he appreciates holding positions of authority while playing the game.
Kane Williamson is serving as New Zealand's all-format captain at the moment. "It'd be something I'd adore. The leadership group is extremely diverse, and I'd love to make my way in there. I did that for quite a few years when I was younger. I truly enjoy hanging out with the guys and trying to motivate the group "said Phillips on The Run Home on SENZ.
The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Phillips has excelled for New Zealand in white-ball cricket. He can contribute some off-spin bowling overs as well, making him a real all-around option for the Blackcaps in the future.
"I believe there is constant conversation. In order to cover all three bases, my plan for the upcoming few minutes is to offer some overs with the ball, keep if necessary, and play my part with the bat. It increases my versatility and makes me a stronger member of the squad " he added.
Phillips, whose most noteworthy performance was a 64-ball 104 against Sri Lanka in a Men's T20 World Cup Super 12 match, was not given any keeping responsibilities because New Zealand preferred Devon Conway's abilities as a temporary wicket-keeper.
He thinks that playing as New Zealand's full-time goalkeeper might someday become a reality. "I haven't discussed a backup keeper position with (coach) Gary Stead. I would have replaced Devon (Conway) if he had been hurt during the World Cup just finished, so perhaps that is something we consider in the future." After taking a sabbatical from playing international cricket, New Zealand will tour Pakistan in December 2022–January 2023 for two Tests and three ODIs, followed by a trip to India for three ODIs and as many T20Is.
