Yashasvi Jaiswal's Learning Curve: Gaining Insights from Cricket Legend Virat Kohli

Trinidad: Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a strong start to his international career and appears to be the technically proficient red-ball opener that India has been seeking for. He scored a spectacular century in his debut innings against the West Indies at Roseau, and the Mumbai batsman followed it up with another half-century in Trinidad on the opening day of play.

Even though Jaiswal is still a young man, his climb has been swift. Jaiswal was called up to the Test team after a good domestic campaign for Rajasthan Royals in the Ranji Trophy and the IPL. This comes as India looks to bolster its lineups ahead of the upcoming WTC cycle.

Jaiswal is a young southpaw who is still learning how to play on the world stage, despite the fact that his talent and quality have been on display for all to witness in all formats. Jaiswal gave appreciation to Virat Kohli, a sports legend, during a press conference held during the Port of Spain Test for the exposure and experience he gained from spending time in the locker room and on the field.

“It is amazing to see him bat. What can I say? He is a legend. I am blessed to play with him,” said Jaiswal of the senior India batter. Kohli is playing his 500th international match, becoming one of a select few to be part of that club.

“There’s a lot of things to learn from him be it cricket and outside of it. I try to pick his mind,” continued the left-hander. The pair shared a 110-run partnership in Roseau, and Kohli has shown fine form himself, scoring 76 in the first Test and carrying a score of 87* overnight at the Queen’s Park Oval.

Jaiswal talked about how it helped him grow as a player and improve his skills and mindset playing on a global scale to have access to such seasoned players in the changing room during his maiden tour.

“Everyone has their own way to explaining things. They all have experience. I listen to all of their advice very carefully. When they are talking there are few thoughts behind it. Getting information, other small stuff, it’s just incredible,” Jaiswal said.

The Mumbai batter also praised and credited his captain and opening partner, Rohit Sharma. “It’s really nice to bat with Rohit bhaiya. We always talk about the situation, how we can go forward, of course, we have our plans. It was really amazing to bat with him.”

In Dominica, Jaiswal and Rohit scored 240 runs together. They followed that up in Trinidad with another century stand. With his young career, Jaiswal has been a great asset to the squad, providing a left-handed alternative at the top of the order as well. He should be a dependable member of the Indian team as it moves toward a younger core of players in the future.
