The star player and World number one Rafael Nadal played the second-round clash under the lights at the Arthur Ashe Stadium against New York's Taro Daniel. He defeated him by 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

With this win, he moves into the third round of the US Open on Friday. It is the 51st match win of the season and he has remained two-time US Open winner. He has booked his spot in the third round for a third straight year.

In the next clash, he will have to face  Leonardo Mayer of Argentina on Saturday. The 31-year-old Nadal has won 16 Grand Slam singles titles, the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles, an all-time record of 30 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, tied with Novak Djokovic. He became the seventh male player in history and youngest of five in the Open Era to achieve the Career Grand Slam at age 24.​
