It has been found in a study that people who do not dream while sleeping increase the risk of Alzheimer's Disease. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is the phase of sleeping during which most dreams are observed. Every fall in Rapid Eye Movement slip increases the risk of having any type of dementia of 9% and the risk of having Alzheimer's increases by 8%.

Dr. Mathew Pace, researcher at the Boston University School of Medicine, says that different patterns of sleep can affect Alzheimer's disease. This research is based on the discovery of the US Sleep Study in which 321 participants of 60 years of age were included, who were observer for 12 years.

What is the research done earlier: In the beginning of this year, the same team had found in another research that people who sleep more than 9 hours per night, the danger of becoming dementia doubles in comparison to people who sleep for less hours.

Dr Alison Evans of the Alzheimer's Research Charity of the UK said that it is impossible to say whether this study is a result of whether the risk of dementia increases with disturb REM sleep or it is its initial consequence. More research is needed to better understand the complexity of the relationship between sleep and dementia.
