India's oldest fossil found with 'red algae': Study

Group of scientists recently unveiled the fossil they found. This fossil is India's oldest fossil, which contains the traces of red algae. As per the reports, these algae is considered to be 1.6 billion years old.

Till this time, our scientists have found algae that are 1.2 billion years. Stefan Bengtson, professor emeritus of paleozoology at the Swedish Museum of Natural History said, "The ‘time of visible life’ seems to have begun much earlier than we thought."

Bengtson said, "You cannot be a hundred percent sure about material this ancient, as there is no DNA remaining, but the characters agree quite well with the morphology and structure of red algae."
