New Delhi: The Congress has expressed displeasure over the Supreme Court's decision to release Nalini Sriharan and five other convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The Congress says it will find a legal way out and disagrees with Sonia Gandhi's decision. In fact, Sonia Gandhi herself had forgiven Nalini, with which the Congress has expressed disagreement. Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot has described the Supreme Court's decision as shocking. Gehlot said that the apex court's decision to release the convicts of former PM Rajiv Gandhi's assassination surprised the people. Congress national spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "The Congress' views on the matter are similar to those of the central government. The party does not agree with Sonia Gandhi's view and the party has articulated its stand on it for many years. He said that the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi is not like any other crime, it is a national issue.'' Rajiv was assassinated by a female suicide bomber of the extremist outfit, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) group, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991. Seven convicts were sentenced to death in the case, including Nalini Sriharan, Ravichandran, Murugan, Santhan, Jayakumar, Robert Poyes and Perarivalan. Congress national general secretary Jairam Ramesh had said, "The Supreme Court's decision to release the killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi is completely unacceptable and completely wrong.'' What did Sonia Gandhi say about Rajiv Gandhi's assassination? Let us tell you that in the year 2000, on the intervention of Rajiv Gandhi's wife and former Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, the death sentence of Nalini Sriharan was commuted to life imprisonment. At the time when Nalini was arrested, she was 2 months pregnant. Nalini had written a book from jail, in which she mentioned that Sonia Gandhi had said that 'how can I blame that child for his crime, he has not come into the world yet, so I forgive him.' Not only this, Sonia Gandhi had requested the court for clemency for Nalini.
