Another temple zamindoj in Tamil Nadu, 20 protesting devotees arrested

Chennai: TheTamil Nadu government has demolished the Sri Narasimha Anjaneyar Swami Temple in Chennai. The government termed the temple as illegal and demolished it terming it as an encroachment on the banks of river Adyar in Varadrajpuram. Revenue officials along with the police force led by tambaram assistant commissioner visited the spot and started demolishing the temple.

The action comes after three encroachment notices were issued to the temple trust. Angry Hindu devotees protested and also objected to the demolition of the temple. According to media reports, about 20 people who protested and argued with the police on Monday have been arrested and detained in a nearby community hall. Tell us that the temple of Shri Narasimha Anjaneyar Swami was located near Mudichur for the last 25 years and was built on 55 cents of land. A few years ago, revenue officials found that the temple had been constructed on an encroached reservoir and sent a notice to the temple representatives. The idols of Narasimha Anjaneyar temple in Tambaram were handed over to trustees during the demolition.

According to the information, this temple has been present for 25 years. It was demolished in 2015 and rebuilt at the same place. Earlier in the month of July, 2021, the Tamil Nadu Government demolished a 125-year-old temple on the banks of Apond Muthanankulam in the name of removing encroachments under the Smart City Project. The Kamchipuram monastery had then reported that most Hindu temples were built on the banks of rivers or lakes so that devotees could bathe or wash their hands and feet before entering the temples, which cannot be called encroachments.
