New Delhi: Today is the martyrdom day of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. On this day, this hero of freedom was hanged. Bhagat Singh, who sacrificed his life for India at a young age, is still an inspiration to the youth. Today is remembered as Shaheed Diwas or Sacrifice Day. Bhagat Singh, who was hanged at the age of 23 for independence, used to chant slogans of Inquilab Zindabad and Samrajyawad Murdabad. Before the death of Bhagat Singh, who was sentenced to death along with revolutionaries Rajguru and Sukhdev in Lahore central jail on March 23, 1931, the last wish was not fulfilled. Bhagat Singh was lodged in cell number 14 in Lahore Central Jail, the floor of which was also raw. The grass had grown on it. The cell was so small that Bhagat Singh's body could hardly come into it. However, he had become accustomed to the life of the prison. In fact, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged 12 hours ahead of time. He was earlier scheduled to be hanged on March 24. Earlier, Bhagat Singh had appealed to the jail's sanitation worker Bebe to bring home food for him a day before the enactment. But, Bebe could not fulfil this last wish of Bhagat Singh, as it was decided to hang him ahead of time and Babe was not allowed to enter the jail. It is said about Bhagat Singh that he used to keep a dictionary in one pocket and a book in the other. He had a bookworm in his mind. When he went to a friend's house or was sitting somewhere, he immediately took out a book from his pocket and started reading. Due to this, if any word of English was not understood, then by taking out a dictionary, he understood its meaning.
