Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Monday announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh from the state government to Lakshya Sen, a member of the Indian men's badminton team that won the Thomas Cup. According to the release issued here, the Chief Minister has made the announcement only after inaugurating the 'Mini-Olympic Sports Meet-2022' organized by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports. He also said that his government is going to promote all sports. Bommai has said that we have selected a group of 75 players from different sports for special training in preparation for the Paris Olympics (in 2024). India's men's badminton team etched its name in history by winning the Thomas Cup title for the first time by defeating 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in a one-sided final in Bangkok on Sunday. World Championships medalists Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth, besides world number eight pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, scored a memorable win for the team. There were reports sometime back that World Championships bronze medalist Lakshya Sen has advanced to the quarter-finals of the All England Badminton Championships men's singles after beating world number three Anders Antonsen in straight games here on Thursday. India's women's singles challenge ended with PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal losing in the second round. The 20-year-old Sen from Almora, who won the India Open title in January this year and runner-up at the German Open last week, also clinched a 21-16, 21-18 victory over third seed Antonsen. Antonsen is a 2-time medalist at the World Championships. Sen and Antonsen were facing each other for the first time at the international level. In the quarterfinals, Sen will face China's Lu Guang Xu, who defeated 8th seed Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong 21-10, 21-11. In women's singles, however, India has faced disappointment. Sindhu and Saina, two-time Olympic medalists, continued their poor show as both lost in three-game clashes. Sindhu, seeded sixth, lost 19-21, 21-16, 17-21 to lower-ranked Japanese player Sayaka Takahashi. This match lasted for one hour and six minutes.
