CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government said on Sunday that 12 more samples had tested positive for Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5. According to Tamil Nadu Medical and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian, 12 of the 150 samples collected in the state tested positive for the coronavirus Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5. "About 150 samples were taken from people and sent to a laboratory in Hyderabad, and results have reached us directly from the lab. In Tamil Nadu, two novel COVID-19 variants have been detected ", he said. The patients, who are from Chennai and the surrounding areas, have been segregated and are doing well.
Further, the minister informed that the health officials are keeping an eye on the secondary contacts who came in contact with the primary contacts of the patients. The state health minister further stated that the one case of the BA.4 variant found in Chennai's Navalur in May has recovered completely.
J Radhakrishnan, the Principal Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Health Department, contacted all 12 people who tested positive for the Omicron subvariants, the minister said, adding that the finding of these new variants will be formally announced by the Central government”.
The vigilance comes as Covid-19 cases are increasing in Tamil Nadu. The state recorded 107 new coronavirus cases on Sunday. There were no new fatalities, bringing the total death toll to 38,025 people. According to a medical report, there are 836 active cases in the state.
