Big relief to CPI, TMC and NCP, Election Commission postponed its decision

New Delhi: The Election Commission has postponed its decision to withdraw recognition of the 'National Party' given to Communist Party of India (CPI), Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This decision was to be taken in view of the poor performance of these parties in the Lok Sabha elections held in May 2019. According to Election Commission sources, these parties had told the Election Commission in their petition that elections of different state assemblies are going to be held continuously in the coming days, which will definitely improve their performance.

The Election Commission said that we have accepted their petition and deferred the decision. To get the recognition of the 'National Party', it is necessary that that party has the status of 'State Party' in at least 4 states. According to the Election Marks (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, a political party will be granted national party status only when its candidates have got at least six per cent of the total voting in four or more states during the Lok Sabha or Assembly elections.

Apart from this, that party should have at least two percent seats as against the total Lok Sabha seats and its candidates should be from at least three states. The three parties told the Election Commission that they are very old parties and they have played an important role in national politics. Therefore, their status should not be based on recent electoral performance.
