Soon another country can appear on the world map. Boganwili, a resource-rich island after a long battle, is on its way to break away from Papua New Guinea and become a new country. On November 23, over two lakh registered voters will vote for greater autonomy or independence. Voting will continue till 7 December.

According to media reports Boganwili is named after an 18th-century French explorer. At the end of the 19th century it became part of the German colony, German New Guinea. During the First World War, Australia came under control and remained under the same control until 1975.

For your information, let us tell you that in 1975, Papua New Guinea (PNG) got independence and Boganwili became a province. Shortly before PNG became Boganwili, the independence was announced. But this was ignored by both Australia and PNG. This led to dissatisfaction and from 1988 the war for secession continued for the next nine years. At the beginning of the war, between 4,000 and 20,000 people died in the region. Apartheid also added ghee to this battle. Actually, there were whites living on the Boganwili islands and most of the people in Papua New Guinea were black due to being in control of the colony.
