On Saturday, Sunrisers Hyderabad, the 2016 IPL champions, named West Indies batting veteran Brian Lara as their new head coach. Lara will take over for Tom Moody as the tournament's chief executive in the upcoming seasons. Lara served as the Sunrisers' batting coach and strategic advisor during the 2022 IPL season. "The cricketing legend Brian Lara will be our head coach for the upcoming #IPL seasons," announced the franchise through their official social media accounts. Since Friday, there have been numerous media rumours that Moody would not be taking over as Sunrisers head coach for the upcoming IPL seasons and that both he and the team had split ways amicably. The Glazers Family-owned Desert Vipers, one of the six clubs in the future ILT20 in the UAE, which is set to begin in January 2023, has hired Moody as their director of cricket. From 2013 through 2019, Moody served as the Sunrisers' head coach for the first time. Under his leadership, Hyderabad made the playoffs five times and captured the IPL title in 2016. Trevor Bayliss, an Australian like Moody, took over as head coach in 2020. But in 2021 Bayliss remained the team's head coach while Moody rejoined the organisation as director of cricket. Following a disastrous 2021 IPL season in which the Sunrisers finished bottom in the standings with just three victories, Bayliss resigned, and Moody was subsequently rehired as the team's head coach. In IPL 2022, Moody would return as the Sunrisers' head coach, but nothing would change. With six wins and eight losses, the Sunrisers placed eighth overall in the 10-team tournament. Sunrisers appeared to be making the playoffs in the early half of the season after winning five straight games. However, they had to endure five straight losses in the second half of the competition, which prevented them from having a chance to advance to the playoffs. Injuries to important Indian players like Washington Sundar and T Natarajan at vital points in the competition upset the balance of the starting eleven, while captain Kane Williamson was not at his best with the bat.
