Karnataka govt issues ordinance to check forced conversion

BENGALURU: The Karnataka state Congress called a Jan Andolan (people's agitation) against the governing BJP government in Karnataka's announcement that it will bring the Anti-Conversion Law into action by promulgating an ordinance.

On Friday, opposition leader Siddaramaiah claimed that the incumbent BJP government, which has been exposed for corruption and mismanagement, is preparing to enact the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021 in order to deflect public attention.

Siddaramaiah has urged the Governor to reject the Anti-conversion Bill, claiming that it was "introduced by the ruling BJP only with the objective of threatening and harassing minorities." "The current law is sufficient to prohibit forcible religious conversions and to cope with alluring religious conversions." Conversion that is forced through threats or rewards can be stopped by our law.

"What then is the point of the new law?" "The only reason is to harass and frighten minorities," he said."This is RSS's political agenda. True Hindus believe in universal brotherhood and will reject the BJP's sectarian tactics. When the BJP takes office, there are regular attacks on minorities. "This government has made the people of Karnataka ashamed," Siddaramaiah accused.
