Bangalore: Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will vote in a biennial election to the Karnataka Legislative Council on June 3, the Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday. The election is required since the terms of office of seven members will expire on June 14.
The election notice will be released on May 17, the deadline for filing nominations is May 24, and the nominations will be scrutinised the following day. The deadline to withdraw your candidacy is May 27. On June 3, polling will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with voting beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m.
Due to the retirement of MLCs Laxman Sangappa Savadi and Lahar Singh Siroya of the BJP, Ramappa Timmapur, Allum Veerabhadrappa, Veena Achaiah S of the Congress, and H M Ramesha Gowda and Narayana Swamy KV of the JD, the seats will be vacant (S).
According to a statement from the Commission, the Chief Secretary of Karnataka has been asked to depute a senior officer from the state to ensure that the existing guidelines about COVID-19 containment measures are followed while completing election preparations.
In the upper chamber, the ruling BJP now has 37 members, just one shy of a simple majority. The number 38 represents the midway point in the 75-member Legislative Council. While Congress has 26 members, the JD(S) has ten. Aside from the Chairman, there is one other independent member.
