Who will handle the Command of the Delhi Congress? Key meeting at Sonia Gandhi's house today

NEW DELHI: An important meeting is scheduled to be held at the home of interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi this evening. The meeting is expected to decide on the name of the Delhi Congress President. This post has been vacant since the demise of Sheila Dikshit. Jaiprakash Agarwal, Yoganda Shastri, Mahabal Mishra, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Rajesh Lilothia are leading the race for the Delhi Congress Presidentship.

However, Congress MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu from Punjab has also been named in the race for the post. Sonia Gandhi, who has taken over as interim president in the past, faces a number of major challenges. It is also a challenge to appoint a new Delhi President after Sheila Dikshit's demise. Several state party presidents had also resigned since Rahul Gandhi resigned as president following a bitter defeat by the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections.

While Assembly elections are due in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand in a few months, the post of Congress President in Delhi has been lying vacant since the death of Sheila Dikshit, which is crucial for next year's assembly elections. On the other hand, former Punjab cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu seems to be in the making slate to be appointed as the Delhi Congress President. Navjot Singh Sidhu is also said to have been named in the Delhi Congress presidential race.
