GENEVA: While there have been a few occurrences of novel Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5, the World Health Organization reports that there has been no change in severity or transmissibility. South Africa, Botswana, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, and the United Kingdom have all detected the new sub-variants thus far. The World Health Organization previously stated that it is keeping track of the new variants. "So far, there are fewer than 200 sequences available, but this is expected to change... We're keeping a close eye on (the virus) to see if there's an increase in case detection, but (so far) there hasn't been any change in epidemiology or severity "Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's lead epidemiologist, said during a press conference on Wednesday. Because of their "additional mutations that need to be further examined to understand their influence on immunological escape potential," the World Health Organization stated it had began tracking the two sub-variants. The WHO reported in its most recent weekly epidemiological update that the number of new Covid-19 cases and deaths is continuing to drop. For the third week in a row, more than 7 million cases and over 22,000 deaths were reported during the week of April 4-10, a reduction of 24% and 18%, respectively, from the last week.
