NRC authority to take action on officer in corruption case

Guwahati: Verification of documents is going on in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court for identification of illegal Bangladeshi nationals. The work is being done by the National Register of Citizens (NRC). This process has often been questioned. The authority is considering a recommendation to take strict action against a senior Assam government official for allegedly manipulating the investigation of the document.

Sources said, Kamal Kumar Baishya, deputy commissioner of Kamrup district, had sent a report to NRC state coordinator Pratik Hazela two months ago on the alleged irregularities of the former Circle Officer of Chamaria. The case of this irregularity came to light in 2018. Sources claimed that the report described how the then Circle Officer made all the affected people natives to reduce their workload.

It ticked the OI column for all people, including Hindus and Muslims, in the verification list to avoid the burden of cross-examination of the document. Sources say it is not a corruption case. The Deputy Commissioner's investigation found that the officer's job was very poor and he was not serious about his work. The Government has been the target of the Opposition on the NRC. They allege that the government is playing communal politics under the guise of it. Many people committed suicide after the process started. Human rights activists are calling it a violation of the right of the people.
