According to a statement released on Friday by India's Permanent Mission to the UN, a platoon of female peacekeepers will be sent to Abyei as a member of the Indian Battalion in the United Nations Interim Security Force, Abyei (UNISFA). Indian women have a long history of participating in UN peacekeeping deployments. Before being sent to the Republic of the Congo in 1960, women working in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services were interviewed by UN Radio. It is pertinent to note that Indian peacekeepers have served in United Nation peacekeeping missions around the world. They safeguard civilians and assist peace processes, and also carry out specialist tasks. In Eritrea, Indian engineers helped to rehabilitate roads as part of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE).
