PM urges lower import dependence on Make-in-India move

NEW DELHI: While citing increased demand and prospects in sectors such as semi-conductors and electric cars, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said manufacturers should work with the aim of reducing reliance on foreign sources.

The Prime Minister remarked during a post-Budget webinar hosted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on Thursday that fields like steel and medical equipment should be prioritised for indigenous manufacture.

The Prime Minster said,  the budget for FY23 included numerous substantial provisions for the 'Aatmnirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' programmes. He reaffirmed his call for "zero defect-zero effect manufacturing" from the Red Fort's ramparts, adding that "Aatmnirbharta," or self-sufficiency, is all the more crucial from a national security standpoint.

Industrial, he said, accounts for 15% of India's GDP, but there are endless potential, and the country should seek to build a strong manufacturing foundation. He also stated that many of India's festival needs, which are currently acquired from foreign suppliers, may be easily met by local manufacturers. "Take pride in your company's products, and create that pride in your Indian customers as well. Some popular branding can also be considered in this case "He said.
