New Delhi: Rameshwar Teli, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, revealed on Wednesday that the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has provided employment to about 1 lakh people through the LPG distribution system (PMUY). In the last five years, LPG coverage has expanded from 61.9 percent to approaching saturation, according to an official statement. "During COVID-19, more than 14 crore free LPG refills were delivered to PMUY beneficiaries as part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package," Teli said at a post-budget webinar planned to speed up development and make public welfare schemes more effective. Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, spoke to the public on the importance of making PMUY a door-to-door programme. "To make the scheme effective, self-help groups should be included, an LPG Bank should be established to serve as a micro-finance for refills, a network of micro distributors should be established, and existing social networks and institutional knowledge should be leveraged to attract consumers for refill," Jain said. Representatives from oil marketing businesses, distributors, and cylinder makers attended the webinar.
