National Sewing Machine Day is celebrated every year on 13 June. Mahatma Gandhi fought for the freedom of India. He used to work on the spinning wheel. This principle of his is still being adopted today. India is working towards becoming "self-reliant". On National Sewing Machine Day, many men and women as backline activists have started sewing PPE kits, face masks for children, poor and needy. This is a difficult time and during this epidemic, a team of 5 handicapped people of Narayana Seva Sansthan is determined to serve more than 40000 face masks and 525 PPE kits to the needy, railway employees, police, and backward class people. They are currently engaged in this work. Devendra Lodhi, a 28-year-old disabled person from Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, is also making PPE kits, face mask, face shield campaign after skill training at Narayan Sewing Center in Udaipur. Talking about this, Devendra said, "During the nineties, newly married women's used to help in the livelihood using sewing machines to sew clothes and become 'Self-Sufficient'. Gradually, time changed and machines went from the hands of women to men, and today both of them are walking shoulder to shoulder in society and giving a better future to their families". Prashant Agarwal, president of Narayana Seva Sansthan also shared an experience from his childhood and said, "When I was a kid, we had our favourite tailors who stitched our school uniforms, festivals clothes and wedding dresses. Even when there was no electricity available. The tailor worked tirelessly throughout the day with a broad smile on his face." In the midst of a nationwide lockdown, Narayana Seva Sansthan's disabled people are making PPE kits, face masks, face shields, gloves. They are on the path of becoming self-reliant and at this time everyone is appreciating them. We also salute this step and their hard work. India's representative in UN, T. S.
