Lucknow: In the current marketing year of sugar, the arrears of sugarcane farmers on mills had increased to Rs 19,000 crore by June 18. The biggest outstanding is on the mills of Uttar Pradesh. The Official Figures give information in this regard. The arrears of farmers at the sugar mills of UP have reached Rs. This is followed by Karnataka at Rs 1,704 crore and Maharashtra at Rs 1,338 crore. In Punjab, sugarcane farmers have outstanding Rs 989 crores on miles, Gujarat and Bihar owe Rs 965 crore and Rs 923 crore respectively. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that payment of sugarcane price by sugar mills to sugarcane farmers is a routine process. However, due to surplus sugar production in the last sugar season, sugar prices were soft, adversely affecting the liquidity situation in sugar mills, leading to increased cane arrears of farmers. According to statistics, a total of Rs 18,958 crore was outstanding for sugarcane farmers on June 18 of the current marketing year 2018-19 (October-September).
