Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister S. Duraimurugan, who is leading a delegation of state ministers and legislators to the Mullaperiyar dam site, has stated that the state is committed to raising the dam's water level to 152 feet. The opposition AIADMK has claimed that the state's DMK-led government was eating out of Kerala's hands and that water was released from the dam to benefit Kerala. According to the AIADMK, the release of water will have an impact on Tamil Nadu farmers, particularly in the state's five agrarian districts. In Kerala, Duraimurugan's statement, which he made after visiting the dam and speaking to reporters, has not gone over well. Dean Kuriakose, a Congress leader and Member of Parliament from the Idukki constituency, spoke out strongly against the TN minister's remarks. Many analysts see the minister's statement that Tami Nadu wants the water level in Mullaperiyar kept at 152 metres as a political statement against the AIADMK and a response to allegations that the DMK government had sold out the state's interests to Kerala.
